Dubai’s reputation as a world class sporting destination was enhanced on Thursday with the announcement at the iconic Burj Al Arab that the ‘golden sands’ of ‘Dana World’ would stage the Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup for five years (from 2012 to 2017).

The memorandum was signed by Matar Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, and Juan Cusco, President of Beach Soccer Worldwide.

Dubai had already hosted the inaugural edition of the championship in November, 2011. Eight teams took part in the inaugural tournament last year. The UAE reached the semi-finals of the tournament which was won by Russia who beat beach soccer giants Brazil 5-4 in the last match.

So impressed were the Beach Soccer Worldwide officials by the organising capability of Dubai that they happily agreed to stage the tournament’s next five editions in the city.

While speaking on the occasion, Juan Cusco hailed Dubai as one of the greatest sporting venues in the world. “Dubai hosted a great beach soccer world championship in 2009. And the inaugural edition of the Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup in Dubai in 2011 was also a great success. We are proud of our decision to stage the tournament for the next five years in this city. Dubai has become the most popular destination for beach soccer,” he said.

“The 2009 tournament in Dubai was excellent. It was the best beach soccer tournament ever in my opinion. The Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup is the second most prestigious beach soccer tournament after the Beach Soccer World Cup. We were so happy with the great success of the first edition in Dubai last year. Now Dubai has almost become as popular as Rio de Janeiro, the beach soccer heaven. Even all the players now want to play in Dubai. This has happened because of the professionalism and commitment this city has shown towards sports.”

Matar Al Tayer too was delighted during the memorandum signing ceremony. “We gladly sign the agreement of a long-term partnership with the Beach Soccer Committee in Fifa to host the Intercontinental Cup for five years,” he said.

“We also take pride in the fact that Dubai’s name will be linked for the following five years with this tournament and that our audience will get the chance of seeing international teams and elite champions. Our national team will also get the chance to improve their game in order to be among the best teams in this sport which is gaining popularity at a rapid pace.”

Al Tayer added: Dubai Sports Council will continue to work in its aim to develop the sports sector in the Emirate of Dubai. Since we are here in a sports-related event for beach soccer, I am pleased to inform that work with UAE football Union will continue in order to prepare for the second season of Beach Soccer League, Cup and Super Cup after the great success of the first season.”

The tournament will be held in November.
