The Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) got under way in spectacular fashion on Thursday night with organisers expecting an increase in visitor numbers this year.
DSS 2012 began with Modhesh World at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Thursday. Hundreds of excited visitors enjoyed a spectacular gymnastics show, dancing and a coulourful parade. Modhesh World is one of the main attractions of DSS, which is now in its 15th year.
“This at Modhesh World we have an increased number of games, particularly electronic games. There is a wide range of attractions for kids, but we’ve also not forgotten about the parents. So this year, we are expecting massive traffic.”
During the first year of the event, DSS attracted 600,000 visitors and raised Dh850 million. Last year DSS recorded four million visitors and raised Dh8.8 billion.
DSS runs till July 14 with over 100 events taking place. Dubai residents, particularly families, are also looking forward to exciting shows and shopping experiences during the event.
Abishaik Mohammed’s family has always eagerly waited for the DSS. “As the summer holidays start, families like us wait for something new, for a new round of shopping, winning and fun,” said the Egyptian. For 15-year-old Filipino, Joseph Esguerra and his friends, the DSS is a time of fun and excitement. “Back to Modhesh, this summer will be different from our last summer of travelling,” he said.
Laila Mohammed Suhail, CEO of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment, an agency of the Department of Economic Development (DED) and the organiser of DSS, said that Modhesh World is a major attraction that supports Dubai’s position as an attractive family destination for summer vacationers.
“The edutainment venue has built a well-deserved reputation as a great destination for both residents and visitors looking for fun and affordable family entertainment.”
Suhail said that the DSS has transformed the summer season in Dubai by attracting visitors from across the region and boosting the economy of Dubai.
Last year, DSS welcomed four million visitors with a registered spending of Dh8.8 billion as compared to 600,000 visitors with a spending of Dh850 million the previous year.
An array of activities including Modhesh World, Ski Dubai, Burj Khalifa, and world-class shopping malls entertain the entire family.
With the slogan, ‘Dubai. Summer Fun and More’, this year’s DSS promises a season of family entertainment, shopping promotions, huge raffle prizes, spa promotions and much more.
