Food safety in Dubai is good: DM report
The food safety condition in Dubai is good given the high number of food establishments that comply with the specifications and regulations,” said Khalid Mohammed Shareef Al Awadhi, Director of the Food Control Department at the Dubai Municipality. He said this while announcing the details of the department’s report for 2011.
He said the DM’s strict regulations and due inspections have contributed to reducing the food safety risk in Dubai. The Food Control Department has got ISO 17020 certification for all its operations.
According to the report, Dubai imported 9.5 million tonnes of foodstuffs last year while only 7.4 million tonnes were imported in 2010. These food items were imported from 160 countries.
As much as 83 per cent of the Food establishments were found applying mandatory HACCP programmes in 2011 as compared to 57 per cent in 2010.
As per the report, of the 13,000 active food establishments in the emirate, 95 per cent were compliant with the approved standards.
He thanked all bodies concerned and private food establishments for this good result and asked to better their performance in Ramadan.
